Continental Math League (CML): What Parents Should Know
A flyer came home about CML and now you have questions. Here's how the Continental Math League actually works: six problems, thirty minutes, several times a year, at your child's own desk.

Most parents meet the Continental Math League the same way: a flyer in a backpack, or a teacher mentioning that a few kids will be doing “CML” on Thursday morning. It’s one of the quieter competitions, which is a shame, because it’s also one of the gentlest ways to get a young child started.
The short version: Continental Math League is a season of short math contests that happen at your child’s own desk, during the school day, a few times across the school year. Six problems. Thirty minutes. No stage, no test center, no Saturday morning drive.
That last part is what makes it different, and it changes what you need to know as a parent.
What Continental Math League actually is
Continental Mathematics League, Inc. runs contests in several subjects: math alongside science, geography, language arts, and social studies. Math is the one most families run into first.
The defining feature is that CML is administered by the school. Your school registers a team, downloads the materials, and a teacher proctors the meet in a normal classroom on a normal school day. The school grades the papers using an answer key CML provides, then enters the scores on CML’s website. Results go up online after each meet.
That has a real consequence: you generally cannot sign your child up yourself the way you would for Math Kangaroo. CML runs through schools, and if your child’s school participates, a teacher is the one who makes it happen.
If your school doesn’t participate, there is still a way in, and it costs a lot less than most parents expect. More on that further down; it is the most useful thing on this page.
The format: six problems, thirty minutes, written answers
Every math meet, at every elementary grade level, looks the same:
- 6 questions
- 30 minutes
Which works out to five minutes per problem. That number is worth remembering, because it shapes how you’d help a child prepare.
One detail surprises families coming from other competitions: CML is not multiple choice. The paper has an answer column down the right side, and the instruction is simply to place your answer for each question in it. Your child writes the number — no five options to work backward from, no narrowing things down by eliminating the silly ones.
That sounds harsher than it is in practice. It just means the skill being tested is slightly different: arriving at an answer, rather than recognizing one.
Two structural things to know:
Grades 2 and 3 sit the same paper. CML’s own sample for that level is headed “Grade 2-3.” If you have a 2nd grader, they are working on the same questions as the 3rd graders. If you have a 3rd grader, they are at the older, more confident end of that paper, which is a nice place to be for a first year.
From grade 4 up, there are two divisions. CML splits grades 4–9 into the Euclidean and Pythagorean divisions. In CML’s words, the Euclidean division “has questions calling upon average reading comprehension and analytical reasoning,” while the Pythagorean division calls upon “above-average reading comprehension and analytical reasoning.” Note that both descriptions lead with reading comprehension, which matters more than it sounds. We’ll come back to it.
A team cannot enter both divisions, though a school can run separate teams in each.
How many meets, and when
This is the part that gets misreported most often, because the answer depends on your child’s grade.
- Grades 2–3: three meets
- Grades 4–9: five meets
For the 2026–27 season, the scheduled dates are all first Thursdays:

So the younger grades join partway through, running January to March, while grades 4 and up start back in November.
Schools get some latitude. CML asks that each meet “be held on the day that it is scheduled or the nearest possible day,” so don’t be thrown if your school runs theirs a few days off.
The more important takeaway is the shape of the thing: CML is a season, not a test. Scores accumulate across meets. A rough first outing in November does not decide anything, and there are three or four more chances to settle in. For a child who has never done a competition before, that structure is much kinder than one high-stakes morning.
How scoring works, and why your child should sit every meet
There is no cap on participation. CML states there is “NO restriction as to how many students may participate in the Meets or Contests.” A school can hand the paper to three kids or thirty.
The team score for each meet is the sum of the top 6 individual scores from that meet. The roster can change from meet to meet, and the cumulative team score is the previous total plus the current one.
For a worried parent, this is the reassuring bit. Your child is not competing against classmates for a place on a team; more children sitting the meet can only help. And because names can change between meets, a quiet December doesn’t shut anyone out of February.
On awards, CML says each participating team at the grades 2–3 level receives 5 certificates and 2 medals, and that national and regional awards recognize individual and team achievement. Exact thresholds aren’t published, so treat specific claims you read elsewhere with suspicion.
What the problems are actually like
Honest answer: harder than the grade level suggests, and less about arithmetic than you’d guess.
CML publishes sample papers for every grade, and the grade 2–3 sample is eye-opening. Among six questions, it includes a problem built on a made-up symbol (the paper defines a new operation, gives one worked example, and asks the child to apply the rule) and a cryptarithm, where letters stand in for digits in an addition problem.
That is not what most 2nd graders see in class, and it isn’t really a test of their addition facts. It’s a test of whether they can read a rule carefully and follow it.
Two original problems in that spirit, one for each level. These are ours, not CML’s, but pitched at the same target.
Grades 2–3. The symbol ⊕ means: add the two numbers together, then subtract the smaller one. For example, 7 ⊕ 2 = (7 + 2) − 2 = 7. What is 9 ⊕ 4?
Answer: 9. Following the rule, 9 ⊕ 4 = (9 + 4) − 4 = 13 − 4 = 9.
There’s a lovely thing hiding here. Adding both numbers and then taking away the smaller one always leaves you with the larger one. So a ⊕ b is just “the bigger number,” every time. A child who notices that has done something better than compute: they’ve found the pattern. That noticing is exactly what CML rewards.
Grades 4–6. Mia has 8 coins worth 95¢ altogether. She has only nickels, dimes, and quarters, and at least one of each. How many dimes does she have?
Answer: 3. Trial and error eventually works, but there’s a tidier route. Call the counts n, d, and q. Then n + d + q = 8 and 5n + 10d + 25q = 95. Divide the money equation by 5 to get n + 2d + 5q = 19, then subtract the coin equation from it: d + 4q = 11.
Now just test the quarters. If q = 1, then d = 7, which leaves 0 nickels, and she has at least one of each. If q = 2, then d = 3, leaving 3 nickels. If q = 3, then d would be negative. So there’s exactly one answer: 3 nickels, 3 dimes, 2 quarters. Check it — 15 + 30 + 50 = 95¢ in 8 coins.
Notice what both share. Neither is hard to calculate. Both are easy to get wrong by reading too fast. That is CML in miniature, and it’s why “read the problem twice” beats any amount of drilling.

If your school doesn’t take part: the Home School route
This is the section most parents need and almost nobody explains, so here it is in full.
CML’s definition of “Home School” is much broader than it sounds. In their words, it “does not necessarily mean a student is schooled at home — rather, simply a student that wishes to participate when his or her school does not.”
So if your child’s school has never heard of CML, they can still enter, and the fee drops to $25 per child, per league, against $90 per team at grades 2–3 or $100 for a first team at grades 4–9.

- Register on cmleague.com with your email address and create an account.

- Then buy your products.
One restriction worth knowing: a student can’t participate on a school team and as a Home School in the same year. It’s one or the other.
Is CML a good fit for your child?
Our read, based on how the contest is built rather than on any official guidance:
CML suits a child who reads carefully and enjoys a puzzle more than a race, and especially one who would freeze at a big test center; this happens at their own desk, with their own teacher, which removes most of the theater. The several-meets-per-season structure is forgiving in a way single-day contests aren’t.
CML is a weaker fit for a child who is energized by the event of it all: the travel, the crowd, the medals table. It can also be a rough first landing for a child not yet comfortable committing to an exact written answer.

Helping your child get ready
A few things that actually match how CML works:
Practice at five minutes a problem. That’s the real constraint. Six problems in thirty minutes with a timer running, now and then, teaches pacing in a way an untimed worksheet can’t.
Have them write the answer down, plainly. No options, no bubbles. Producing a final number and committing to it is its own small skill.
Read the problem twice before starting. Both division descriptions lead with reading comprehension. Most lost points at this level come from misreading, not miscalculating.
Use the solutions. CML provides step-by-step worked solutions, not just answer keys, for the grade 2, grade 3, Euclidean, Pythagorean, and Calculus meets. Sitting down together with them after each meet turns a contest into a lesson, genuinely the highest-value half hour of the season.

If your child likes the kind of problem that rewards slowing down and reading properly, it’s a good place to start. And if their school isn’t doing it, twenty-five dollars and one email gets them in anyway.
