A Division M olympiad is five write-in problems in 30 minutes, from a quick A to a hard E. Each one is short to read and hard to start: it hides one clever idea, and finding that idea is the whole game.
This guide teaches one kind of olympiad problem per chapter, from factors, ratio and rates to probability, angles, circles and right triangles. Every problem shows its position, A to E, like the real paper, and two starred Challenges per chapter go beyond E.

How MOEMS Division M actually works
MOEMS is a season rather than a single test, and Division M is its middle-school level. Here is what your student will actually sit.

MOEMS is run at school by a teacher or coach called the PICO, who enrolls a team of up to 35 students and gives each contest under test conditions, on paper or online, within a roughly four-week window. Students work alone, with no calculators, rulers, graph paper, or other aids.
Scores accumulate across the five contests, so a student score runs from 0 to 25 and the team score is the sum of the ten highest student scores. Every student receives a certificate; the top 50% earn a patch, the top 3–10% a silver pin, the top 2% a gold pin, and a perfect 25 earns the George Lenchner Medallion.
Compared with Division E, the problems assume more: algebra as an everyday tool, angle and area reasoning, the Pythagorean theorem, counting and probability, and the classic ratio, rate, and percent traps. This guide gives each of those its own chapter, then five full practice olympiads in the contest format.

Frequently asked questions
What is Division M?
Division M is the Math Olympiads for Elementary & Middle Schools division for grades 6–8. A sixth grader may be placed in Division E or Division M by their school; this guide is written for the Division M level.
How is this different from the Division E guide?
Division M problems lean on algebra, geometry (including right triangles and circles), counting and probability, and ratios, rates, and percents. This guide gives each of those its own chapter at the grades 6–8 level.
Is it hard?
Yes, on purpose. The guide practices a little above the real level: each chapter climbs from A to E, and the two starred Challenges go beyond E. It is fine to leave them for a second try.
How should my student use the guide?
Before each olympiad, work the chapters the season plan lists, then take that practice olympiad: read all five problems once, then time 30 minutes. Starting late? Any chapter order works.
How is this different from the official books?
The official books compile past problems by contest year. This guide teaches the idea behind each kind of problem, using original practice problems organized by topic.
