Chapter 4 · Logic & Puzzles · Problem 4.7

A box has 3 red socks and 4 blue socks all mixed together. Without looking, what is the smallest number of socks you must pull out to be sure you have a matching pair (two of the same color)?

(A) 2(B) 3(C) 4(D) 5(E) 7

Show answer ⌄

Answer: (B) 3. There are only two colors, red and blue. If you pull 2 socks, you might get one red and one blue — not a pair. But if you pull a 3rd sock, it must match one of the first two, because there are only two colors to choose from. So 3 socks guarantee a matching pair.

A Complete Math Kangaroo Study Plan for Third and Fourth Grade.

The Grades 3–4 Math Kangaroo paper is 24 questions in 75 minutes, in three blocks worth 3, 4 and 5 points, each with five choices. Most questions hide one clever idea behind a picture.

This guide teaches one question type per chapter and climbs from 3-point warm-ups to problems harder than the 5-point block. Every problem shows its points like the real paper.

Every answer has a picture, one line for your child, and a note for you with the most common wrong answer, so you can see exactly where the thinking went off track.

More than memorizing

The confidence to think through a new kind of problem.

Math Kangaroo rewards curiosity, careful reading, and trying a strategy when the answer is not obvious. The guide gives students a friendly way to practise all three.

Frequently asked questions

What grades is this guide for?

This edition is written for third and fourth graders, who sit the same Math Kangaroo paper. The problems match that paper: 24 questions, three point blocks, five choices each.

Is it hard?

Yes, on purpose. The 5-point block of the real paper is hard, so each chapter climbs to that level, and the two starred Challenges go beyond it. It is fine to leave them for a second try.

How should my child use the guide?

Two or three problems a day is plenty. Work through the 12 chapters in four weeks, then take Practice Test A; save the timed Practice Test B (75 minutes) for a few days before the contest.

Are the problems original?

Yes — 100% original, written in the style and difficulty of the real contest. We never copy actual contest problems.

How do I get the guide after buying?

You'll get an instant download page after checkout, plus an email with your download link.

Is there a refund policy?

We generally don't offer refunds, but if you're not satisfied, contact us and we'll do our best to make it right.
