Noetic Learning Math Contest: The Complete Prep Guide

One of the largest elementary math contests in the country is also one of the hardest to find free practice for. Here's the format, the dates, what it costs, and five original practice problems with worked solutions.

If your child came home with a flyer for the Noetic Learning Math Contest, you’ve probably already discovered the strange thing about it: more than 65,000 students took part in the 2025–26 school year, which makes it one of the largest elementary and middle school math contests in the country. And yet when you search for practice problems, there’s almost nothing free to find.

There’s a reason for that, and we’ll get to it below. First, what the contest looks like, when the dates are, what it costs, how your child can enter even if their school doesn’t offer it, and a four-week prep plan that fits into a normal week. At the end there are five original practice problems with full worked solutions, written in the style of the contest.

What the Noetic Learning Math Contest actually is

The Noetic Learning Math Contest (NLMC for short) is a problem-solving contest for students in grades 2 through 8, run by Noetic Learning. It happens twice a year: once in the fall and once in the spring. Schools enter teams, and there’s a separate at-home option for families whose school doesn’t participate.

The organizers describe the goal as “to encourage young students’ interest in math, to develop their problem solving skills, and to inspire them to excel in math.” Noetic says the problems can cover a broad range of topics, including:

  • Computation and number properties
  • Pattern and algebra
  • Geometry and measurement
  • Probability and statistics

Treat that as a sample of the territory rather than a syllabus; Noetic describes it as a range the problems can cover, not a closed list.

One thing to understand before you start preparing: speed at arithmetic counts for much less here than willingness to think. A child who is quick at times tables but stops when a problem looks unfamiliar will struggle. A child who is slower but willing to draw a picture, try a small case, or work backwards will do well. That shapes how you’d sensibly practice.

The format, in plain terms

A few rules that matter for practice:

  • No calculators, and no smartphones or internet during the test.
  • No talking to anyone or communicating in any way during the test.
  • Proctors don’t explain questions. They will not tell your child what a problem means.
  • No retakes, in any scenario.
  • Scratch paper is provided, along with pencils, rulers, and erasers. Your child is meant to write things down.
  • Warnings at 10 minutes and 5 minutes remaining in both formats. A proctor announces them on the paper test; the online system displays them and submits automatically when time runs out.

On the online test, most problems take a free-response numeric answer: your child types a number like 2, 6.5, or -78.2 rather than picking a multiple-choice letter. That makes it different from a contest like Math Kangaroo, where every question has five choices and crossing two off makes a guess worth something. Here there’s nothing to eliminate.

Scoring is simple, and explaining it to your child beforehand helps: each correct answer is worth 5 points, and no partial points are awarded for any question. Twenty problems at 5 points each means a perfect paper is 100. An answer either matches the key or it doesn’t, so there’s no credit for the right method with a slip at the end.

Nothing in the grading procedure deducts anything for a wrong answer, so there is never a reason to leave a question blank. If two minutes are left and three problems are untouched, the right move is to put down the best answer they can on all three.

Two ways to enter, and they work differently

This trips up more parents than any other part of NLMC, because the two routes have different prices, different dates, and different awards.

The school route is the main event. A team is up to 30 students from the same grade at the same school, the fee covers awards and shipping, and it includes three practice tests, which (as you’ll see below) are one of the very few sources of real NLMC-style practice. Mixed-grade teams are allowed, but they have to register at the highest grade in the group, so a 4th grader on a 6th-grade team is competing against 6th-grade material.

The At-Home edition exists so that a child whose school doesn’t offer the contest isn’t locked out. At $29 it’s a reasonable entry point, and your child still gets a raw score and a national percentile so you can see where they landed. But be clear-eyed with your child up front: At-Home scores are not official, and At-Home participants don’t receive medals or ribbons. If your child is motivated by the physical award, that conversation is better had in October than in December.

Our recommendation: if the school offers it, go through the school. If it doesn’t, At-Home is still worth doing. Just set expectations about the certificate first.

Dates and deadlines

Current as of September 2026, covering the 2026–27 season. Every other section of this guide is evergreen; this table is the part that changes each year, so confirm it on the official site before you register.

Two things to notice. First, both editions share the same registration deadline, even though the contests themselves happen at different times. Second, the At-Home contest window is after the school window, not during it. If you’re planning around a holiday week, the at-home fall window runs right after Thanksgiving.

The contest window is a range, not a date. Within it, the school (or your family, for At-Home) picks when to sit the test.

How scoring and awards work

Individual scores are straightforward: 5 points for each of the 20 problems, so an individual score runs from 0 to 100. Team scores are the sum of the top six scores on the team, which is why schools are encouraged to field at least six students and why one strong scorer can’t carry a team alone.

The awards ladder:

  • Team Winner Medal: the highest scorer on each team.
  • National Honor Roll Medal: the top 10% of all participants in each grade.
  • National Honorable Mention Ribbon: the top 50% of all participants in each grade.
  • Team Achievement Plaque: the top 10% of teams in each grade.
  • Digital certificates for every participant.

Awards ship to the team leader about two to three weeks after the contest ends, so don’t expect anything the following Monday.

Point out that Honorable Mention threshold to a nervous first-timer. A ribbon goes to the top half in each grade nationally, so a middle-of-the-pack performance against a strong national field still comes home with something. That’s a useful thing for a first-timer to know before they sit down.

We won’t tell you what score earns Honor Roll in points, because Noetic doesn’t publish cutoffs. Anyone who gives you a specific number is guessing.

Why NLMC practice is so hard to find

The reason comes down to how Noetic handles its own material.

Noetic sells its past tests. A single past test for one grade and one contest session costs $9, and a bundle of six tests for one grade costs $45. Each purchase includes the questions and the solutions. The license is explicit that you’re “NOT authorized to transmit or distribute the documents outside your home or classroom,” and may not use them commercially. The separate archive of past problems and solutions for team leaders sits behind a login.

That’s entirely their right; it’s their material. But it explains the gap. There’s no large public pool of old NLMC papers to work through, which is the thing parents are used to finding for other contests.

So your realistic options are:

  1. The practice tests included with registration, whichever route you take. School teams get three. At-Home registration includes two practice tests with solutions, described as an $18 value, plus the official test and its solutions after the contest. These are the closest thing to the real paper, and you’ve already paid for them, so ask your team leader if you haven’t seen them.
  2. Noetic’s free sample problems. The organizer emails a set of sample problems to anyone who asks, no account needed, and runs a free Problem of the Week newsletter with solutions.
  3. Original practice written in the contest’s style. That’s the gap we built our Noetic prep guides to fill, with a free sample on each page so you can judge the quality before paying anything.

Whichever you use, practice the style: 20 short, creative problems under time pressure. Grinding worksheets won’t do it.

A four-week prep plan that fits a real week

Four weeks at about twenty minutes, three times a week. That’s roughly four hours total, which is plenty. Cramming does nothing for a problem-solving contest.

Week 1: one strand at a time, no clock. Pick one topic area per session and leave the clock off. The goal is recognizing the kinds of questions that show up, before worrying about speed. If your child gets stuck, sit with the problem together rather than giving the answer.

Week 2: mixed sets of five, still no clock. Now shuffle the topics, because the real test doesn’t come sorted. Five problems, as long as it takes. Talk through why an approach worked, not just whether the answer was right.

Week 3: start the clock. Ten problems in 22 minutes matches the paper test’s pace of 45 minutes for 20 (use 25 minutes if they’ll be taking it online). This is the week to teach the most valuable skill in the whole contest: skipping. All 20 problems are worth the same, so two minutes spent stuck on problem 7 is two minutes stolen from problems 18 and 19, which might be easier. Teach your child to give a problem one honest attempt, mark it, move on, and come back.

Week 4: two full runs. Twenty problems in 45 minutes (or 50 if they’ll be taking it online), twice during the week. Review only the problems they missed, then stop.

If your child is doing the online version, have them do at least one practice run typing answers on a keyboard. Typing 6.5 into a box is a different motion from writing it, and the first time shouldn’t be on contest day.

Five original practice problems, with worked solutions

These are our own problems, written in the style and difficulty of the contest. None are copied from a real NLMC test. Let your child try each one before reading the solution.

Problem 1 — Number properties (grades 2–4)

Ben writes the numbers 1, 2, 3, …, 20 on separate cards, one number per card. He removes every card whose number can be divided evenly by 3. How many cards are left?

Solution. First find the cards that get removed, the multiples of 3 from 1 to 20: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18. That’s 6 cards. (21 would be next, but it’s past 20.) Ben started with 20 cards and removed 6, so 20 − 6 = 14 cards are left.

Answer: 14

The contest habit here: count what gets removed rather than what stays. Counting the 14 survivors one by one gets the same answer, but it takes three times as long, and that matters when you have 2¼ minutes.

Problem 2 — Geometry and measurement (grades 3–4)

A rectangle is made from 12 identical small squares arranged in 3 equal rows. Each small square has sides 2 cm long. What is the perimeter of the rectangle?

Solution. If 12 squares are in 3 equal rows, each row has 12 ÷ 3 = 4 squares. So the rectangle is 4 squares wide and 3 squares tall.

Each square is 2 cm on a side, so the rectangle is 4 × 2 = 8 cm wide and 3 × 2 = 6 cm tall.

Perimeter is the distance all the way around: 8 + 6 + 8 + 6 = 28 cm.

Answer: 28 cm

The trap: a child who multiplies 12 × 2 and answers 24 has found something real, but it isn’t the perimeter. Drawing the 3-by-4 grid first takes fifteen seconds and prevents the mistake.

Problem 3 — Pattern and algebra (grades 5–6)

The first term of a pattern is 5. Every term after that is double the previous term, minus 3. What is the fifth term?

Solution. Work forward one step at a time:

  • 1st term: 5
  • 2nd term: 2 × 5 − 3 = 7
  • 3rd term: 2 × 7 − 3 = 11
  • 4th term: 2 × 11 − 3 = 19
  • 5th term: 2 × 19 − 3 = 35

Answer: 35

A habit to build: write the terms in a labelled column. Most errors on pattern problems come from losing track of which term you’re on and stopping at the fourth.

Problem 4 — Probability and counting (grades 5–6)

A bag holds 3 red marbles, 4 blue marbles, and 5 green marbles. Without looking, what is the smallest number of marbles you must take out to be certain you have at least 2 marbles of the same color?

Solution. “Certain” means it has to work even in the unluckiest case. So imagine the worst possible luck: you pull a red, then a blue, then a green: three marbles, all different colors. You could easily be that unlucky.

But there are only 3 colors in the bag. So the 4th marble you pull has to match one you already have. There’s no fourth color for it to be.

Answer: 4

Notice what didn’t matter: how many marbles of each color there are. The 3, 4, and 5 are there to pull you toward adding them up, when only the number of colors counts. Spotting which numbers are decoration is a core competition skill.

Problem 5 — Multi-step reasoning (grades 5–6)

Ava, Ben, and Carla have 60 stickers altogether. Ava has twice as many stickers as Ben. Carla has 12 more stickers than Ben. How many stickers does Ben have?

Solution. Everything is described in terms of Ben, so let Ben’s stickers be one “block.”

  • Ben: 1 block
  • Ava: 2 blocks (twice Ben)
  • Carla: 1 block + 12

Altogether that’s 1 + 2 + 1 = 4 blocks, plus the extra 12, and it all adds to 60.

So 4 blocks = 60 − 12 = 48, which means one block = 48 ÷ 4 = 12.

Check it: Ben 12, Ava 24, Carla 24. Total = 60. ✓

Answer: 12

The technique: when every person is described relative to the same person, make that person the block. Your child doesn’t need algebra notation for this; blocks or a bar drawing work just as well and are easier to check.

The week of the contest

Taper off. Whatever practice you’ve been doing, do less of it in the final week, and nothing new in the last two days. A tired child loses more points to careless mistakes than an under-practiced child loses to unfamiliar topics.

Three small things that help more than extra problems:

  • One short familiarization run rather than a full test. Ten minutes, a few problems, just to remind them what the format feels like.
  • Sleep. It does more for a score than any extra practice set will.
  • A plan for the stuck moment. Agree in advance: one honest try, then mark it and move on. Say it out loud the night before, so that in the moment your child is following a plan instead of panicking.

Have your line ready for afterwards, too. When your child comes out, ask which problem was the most interesting rather than how many they got right. The score arrives weeks later anyway, and that first conversation does a lot to decide whether they want to do the next one. Frequently asked questions

Is the Noetic contest hard? It’s challenging by design, though the difficulty sits in the thinking rather than the arithmetic. The problems are meant to be solved by reasoning, which is why calculators aren’t allowed and why a child who likes puzzles often does better than one who’s quick at math facts.

Can my child do it at home? Yes. The At-Home edition is built for exactly that, at $29 per student, taken online. The trade-off is that At-Home scores aren’t official and don’t qualify for medals or ribbons.

Are calculators allowed? No. Calculators, smartphones, and the internet are all off-limits during the test.

What’s a good score? Scores run from 0 to 100, since each of the 20 problems is worth 5 points. Beyond that, Noetic publishes award thresholds as percentiles rather than point totals (Honor Roll is the top 10% in each grade, Honorable Mention the top 50%) and doesn’t release the point cutoffs. For a first-timer, a sensible goal is finishing every problem they can and leaving nothing unattempted through poor time management.

Is the At-Home edition worth $29? If the alternative is your child not competing at all, yes. They get a real timed problem-solving experience, a raw score, and a national percentile. If their school runs the team version, use that instead: better value per student, plus award eligibility and three practice tests.

What grades can enter? Grades 2 through 8.
