Math Competition Practice for Grades 5–6
We wrote these contest-style problems because the advanced practice a young olympiad mathlete needed wasn't available anywhere. They're challenging and fun, include stories from real math history, and build the critical thinking math olympiads require. Each week you get a compact lesson with only what you need, a worksheet with problems that get harder as you go, and step-by-step solutions.

What Arrives Every Week

A Lesson
Each week, we focus on one topic and explain it clearly, with worked examples and the key ideas and formulas worth remembering. It gives students the tools before they need them.

A Problem Set
Contest-style problems that start with warm-ups and build to real challenges. Free response, no calculator, and room to show the work, because writing out the steps is part of the skill.

Full Solutions
Every problem is solved step by step, with the reasoning behind each move, not just the answer. Students can check their own work and see exactly where a mistake happened.

Stories from Real Math
Most weeks include a story from math history: how young Gauss added 1 to 100 in seconds, Euclid's 2,300-year-old way to find common factors, and Goldbach's conjecture, which no one has proved yet. It's an early look at the advanced math ahead.
Every 5th week is a timed mock test instead. It reviews the topics so far under real contest conditions, with full solutions.
The Topic Rotation
A new topic every week at competition level, well beyond what school covers: number theory, algebra, geometry and counting. Every 5th week is a mock test reviewing the topics so far.
- 1
Factors, Multiples & Divisibility Rules
Find every factor systematically and apply divisibility rules with no calculator.

Primes & Prime Factorization
Identify primes and break any number into its prime building blocks.
- 3
Fractions, Decimals & Percents
Convert fluently between the three and compare them with confidence.
- 4
Ratios & Proportions
Set up and solve ratio and proportion problems the smart way.
- 5
Rates & Unit Rates
Work with speed, price-per-unit, and other everyday rates.
- 6
GCD & LCM
Use greatest common divisor and least common multiple to crack tricky problems.
- 7
Order of Operations & Expressions
Evaluate and simplify expressions without slipping on the order of operations.
- 8
